Thanet Wind Farm, Offshore wind farm near Kent, England
Thanet Wind Farm is an offshore wind installation in the North Sea off the coast of Kent with 100 turbines. The facility uses two submarine cables to transmit power to an onshore substation at Richborough.
The site was selected in 2004 as one of fifteen major wind projects by the Crown Estate and built between 2008 and 2010. Operations began in the early 2010s.
The wind farm represents the United Kingdom's commitment to renewable energy development and demonstrates the nation's leadership in offshore wind technology.
The site is not easily accessible from land because it lies far offshore. Visitors can view the turbines from the coast or from a boat on the water.
The project uses a special dual transformer system that converts power from 33,000 volts to 132,000 volts. This was an innovative solution for efficient energy transmission over long distances.
