Kidwelly Castle

The stone fortress rises above the River Gwendraeth with four round towers, a massive gatehouse, and outer curtain walls forming a concentric layout.

Bishop Roger of Salisbury established the initial wooden fortification in 1106, which later transformed into a stone stronghold following repeated Welsh attacks.

The castle served as a judicial court in the late medieval period, demonstrating the evolution of military structures into centers of civil administration.

Visitors can access the castle daily from March through October, with adult tickets priced at £7.50 and family passes available for £24.

The castle features a rare external staircase built against its outer curtain wall, a structural element uncommon in English fortifications of the period.
