St Donat's Castle, Medieval castle in St Donats, Wales
St Donat's Castle is a medieval fortress that sits on cliffs overlooking the Bristol Channel, combining architectural styles from different periods in its walls and rooms. The structure features curtain walls, gatehouses, and interior spaces expanded with materials sourced from other historic buildings.
The castle was founded in the 12th century by the de Hawey family and remained under the Stradling family's control for four centuries. In 1925, American newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst purchased the property and carried out extensive renovations that transformed its appearance.
The castle's name comes from Saint Donat, an early Christian martyr whose legacy shaped the spiritual identity of this place. Walking through the rooms, visitors can sense how religious and secular power once intertwined here.
The site now operates as a residential school with about 350 international students from over 90 countries, making the grounds active during daytime hours. Visitors should know that access is limited because this is a functioning school building, and that the gardens with their terraces offer a rewarding walk especially in warmer months.
The gardens descend through Tudor-era terraces toward the sea, opening views across to the Somerset coast. These tiered gardens are a rare example of period landscaping that shows how owners used the dramatic clifftop setting.
