Church Of St Donat, Grade I listed church in St Donats, Wales
Church of St Donat is a stone building with medieval features including a rounded chancel arch and double-headed tower arch. It incorporates a north chancel chapel with a three-light window and contains a circular font with scale patterns and stained glass windows inside.
The church was founded in 1101 and stands as one of the oldest religious structures in the region. In the 14th century it received a tower and the Stradling family added a chapel, marking how the site became tied to local nobility.
The church served as a spiritual center for the Stradling family for generations, as shown by the memorials throughout the interior. You can see how deeply connected the family was to this place through their monuments and the chapel they added.
The building sits in a depression near St Donats Castle, which now serves as home to Atlantic College. The location is easily reached on foot from the castle and offers visitors a quiet spot for historical exploration.
The churchyard contains a complete 15th-century preaching cross, a rare example of medieval public devotion. The walls are partly from the 17th century and still have their original ironwork railings, something rarely seen today.
