Living Coasts, Marine zoo and conservation center in Torquay, England.
Living Coasts was a marine zoo in Torquay with sections dedicated to different sea animals and coastal birds. The facility featured a large open-air aviary, penguin habitats, and underwater viewing areas where visitors could watch animals from inside tunnels and windows.
The center opened in 2003 on the site of a former seaside spa facility and became known for innovative approaches to displaying coastal animals. It operated for around 17 years before closing in 2020 due to financial difficulties.
The center contributed £4 million annually to the local economy while maintaining relationships with European and international zoo associations for conservation standards.
The site was located on a hillside with views over the bay, and some pathways involved climbing upward. A cafe overlooking the water and a gift shop provided places to rest and take a break during a visit.
The facility housed a large structure designed to display sea birds in a way that mimicked their natural coastal habitats and behaviors. This approach to animal display was considered forward-thinking when the center first opened.
