Pavilion Theatre, Art Nouveau theatre in Torquay, England
The Pavilion Theatre is an Art Nouveau theatre on the waterfront in Torquay, England, listed as a Grade II building. Its facade is covered in white ceramic tiles, and inside there are several performance spaces lined with ornate wooden panelling.
The building was completed in 1912 on land reclaimed from the sea. The original architect died before the work was finished, so the town's chief engineer took over and saw the project through to completion.
The Pavilion Theatre sits on the waterfront and draws both locals and visitors who combine a harbour walk with an evening show. The building is also used outside of performances, as its location makes it a natural meeting point in the town centre.
The theatre is right on the harbour in Torquay and easy to reach on foot from the town centre. The waterfront location means the building is visible from a distance, so finding it takes very little effort.
The building rests on a concrete raft with a steel frame, engineered to keep it stable on what was once the seabed. Without this foundation, the weight of the theatre would have caused the structure to sink into the soft ground beneath it.
