Lloyd's building, Administrative building in City of London, United Kingdom
Lloyd's building is an administrative tower in the City of London featuring glass elevators mounted on the exterior and silver service towers along the facade. The construction shows all ducts, staircases and technical systems on the outside instead of in internal shafts.
Richard Rogers designed the structure in the early 1980s to replace the old 19th-century Lloyd's building. Construction finished in 1986 after five years of work on the site of the former East India House.
The building takes its name from Lloyd's of London, an insurance market operating since the late 17th century. The exposed pipes and ducts follow the principle that technical installations remain visible while keeping work areas free from service elements.
The structure stands near Leadenhall Street and can be viewed from outside at any time as it surrounds a public street. The interior is not open to visitors and serves exclusively as a workplace for insurance operations.
A central hall on the ground floor reaches the height of eleven stories and is surrounded by work areas that open inward toward the atrium. The structure received Grade I listing in 2011, which is unusual for a 1980s construction.
