Tottenham Court Road, Central street in Camden, England
Tottenham Court Road is a busy shopping street running through central London for about half a mile from Euston Road down to St Giles Circus. The road is lined with shops, offices, and commercial buildings, with its width and straight layout making it one of the most recognizable streets in the area.
The street takes its name from the manor of Tottenham Court, which sat on royal estates in this area. Over the course of the 20th century, it developed from a mostly residential street into a major shopping and office hub.
The western side of this street connects to Fitzrovia's network of independent shops and restaurants that have kept a local character over the decades. You can still see how the mix of traditional storefronts and newer retail spaces shapes how people move through and gather in the area.
The street is easy to reach by Underground and has several entry points for walking around. Since 2021, it has been open to traffic in both directions, making it easier for buses and cyclists to move through, and safer for people on foot.
In the early 1900s, a miniature shooting range operated inside the Fairyland amusement arcade, drawing crowds of visitors. This unusual attraction was a quirk of London entertainment at the time, and nothing like it exists on the street today.
