Polegate, town and civil parish in East Sussex, United Kingdom
Polegate is a small town in Wealden, about five miles north of Eastbourne in East Sussex, with views toward the South Downs. It has a train station on the Southern line connecting London, Brighton, and other towns, plus a High Street area with shops, a supermarket, and local facilities.
Before the 1800s, Polegate was just a small village; everything changed in 1840 when a railway was built between Lewes and Hastings, making it an important station. This rail connection shaped the town's growth and turned it into a transport hub connecting Brighton, Hastings, and London.
The town takes its name from an old gate that once stood in this area. It maintains a community spirit where residents gather at local pubs, shops, and events like the annual carnival procession with floats and live music.
The train station offers regular connections to London stations, Brighton, and other towns, making daily travel straightforward. The town is also served by several bus lines, and the Cuckoo Trail, a long walking and cycling path, connects Polegate to nearby places and is ideal for exploring the surrounding area.
The area was home to the renowned herbalist Nicholas Culpeper in the 1600s, who lived in nearby Folkington and wrote The Complete Herbal, a book still read today about traditional remedies. His work with plants and healing practices laid the foundation for modern understanding of natural medicine in England.
