Ovenden's Mill, Historic windmill in Willingdon and Jevington, England
Ovenden's Mill is a four-story tower windmill with a domed cap and a fantail mechanism on top. Inside, it has three pairs of millstones and different mechanical systems for grinding grain.
The mill was built in 1817 and used wind power to grind grain until 1943. After that, an electric motor took over until operations stopped completely in 1965.
The mill shows how English farmers once processed grain using wind power and mechanical systems. You can still see the original mechanisms that made this work possible.
The main tower is normally closed, but visitors can explore the milling museum on specific Open Days. Updates about these dates are shared through social media channels.
The mill still has its original wooden brake wheel and used two different mechanical systems to operate different millstone pairs. This double system was unusual and shows the technical cleverness of the original design.
