Codnor Castle, Medieval castle in Aldercar and Langley Mill, England
Codnor Castle is the stone ruin of a medieval fortress situated on raised ground in Aldercar and Langley Mill. The remains include defensive walls, structural elements, and foundations scattered across the site, showing the layout and scale of the former stronghold.
The castle began in the late medieval period and underwent changes over several centuries as it evolved from a military stronghold to a noble residence. Eventually the structure fell into decline and ruin.
The castle grounds served as the seat of a prominent noble family whose influence shaped the local area for generations. The remaining structures reveal how residents organized their domestic and defensive spaces.
The site is open to visit, but uneven ground and the exposed hilltop location mean sturdy footwear is essential for safe walking. Check conditions beforehand, as exposed locations can be windy and muddy depending on recent weather.
Stones from the original structure were repurposed to build Castle Farm in the 1530s, creating a tangible link between two historical periods. The very material carrying these walls became part of a later building, merging two eras in brick and mortar.
