Michelham Priory

Michelham Priory is a complex in Arlington combining a Tudor mansion, medieval buildings, and gardens all surrounded by a water-filled moat spanning eight acres. The moat is England's longest and defines the entire setting.

Founded in 1201 as an Augustinian monastery, the complex gradually transformed over centuries into a grand residential property with extensive architectural changes. This shift reflects how the site's purpose evolved significantly over time.

The rooms inside reflect different periods of English life, with a Victorian kitchen and quarters used by World War II evacuees displayed throughout. These spaces show how everyday living changed over the centuries.

The site welcomes visitors from February through December with typical morning opening at 10:30 AM. A cafe and family activity areas on the grounds make it comfortable for longer stays.

A medieval watermill on the grounds remains in working condition, demonstrating how grain was processed using its original mechanical systems. This operational mill offers a rare chance to see historical production methods in action.
