Zoar Strict Baptist Chapel, Baptist chapel in Lower Dicker, United Kingdom
Zoar Strict Baptist Chapel is a Classical building in Georgian style standing along the A22 road with an open pediment and prominent pilasters forming its facade. The interior could accommodate about 800 people and connected to a schoolroom and extended burial ground alongside the structure.
The chapel was founded in 1838 when trustees purchased land and constructed the building under William Gadsby's direction for a set cost. It replaced an earlier smaller meeting house and became an important center for the Strict Baptist movement in the region.
This chapel served as a gathering place for the local religious community and shaped spiritual life in the area for generations. Visitors can still observe how the interior spaces were arranged for worship and community meetings.
The location is easily accessible from the A22 road in Lower Dicker. The site includes historic structures beyond the main building such as the Chapel Cottages built in 1875 and extensive grounds with a burial area to explore.
The chapel drew nearly 1000 attendees during its Silver Jubilee celebration in 1887, demonstrating its remarkable growth from a replacement for a much smaller earlier meeting house. This single event shows how it had become a major gathering place for the religious movement.
