Aldeburgh, Coastal town in East Suffolk, England
Aldeburgh is a town on the North Sea coast in the county of Suffolk. The settlement sits right at the water and consists of a shingle beach, a small center with shops, and residential streets that run inland toward the south.
In the 16th century, shipbuilders here constructed vessels for the English fleet, including the flagship of Francis Drake. The harbor later lost importance when sediment clogged the River Alde and made access difficult.
The Aldeburgh Festival at Snape Maltings, established in 1948, presents classical music performances while celebrating the legacy of composer Benjamin Britten.
The main access to the beach lies near the high street, where several parking areas are available. Anyone seeking quieter stretches can walk the waterfront promenade north or south, though the path on the shingle requires firm footing.
Fishing boats are still hauled directly onto the shingle beach, where crews sell their catch. Wooden huts next to the boats serve as storage sheds, and some offer freshly smoked fish there.
