Hanson Log Boat, Bronze Age dugout canoe in Derby Museum and Art Gallery, England
The Hanson Log Boat, created from a single oak tree trunk, contains preserved sections that display the ancient technique of hollowing wood for water transport.
Discovered in 1998 at a Shardlow gravel pit, this vessel from 1500 BCE carried Bromsgrove sandstone intended for constructing a River Trent causeway.
The preservation process at York Archaeological Trust involved immersing the wooden sections in polyethylene glycol for 18 months to maintain structural integrity.
The Derby Museum presents the log boat in sections, allowing visitors to examine the construction methods and materials used during the Bronze Age period.
The discovery included a cargo of sandstone within the vessel, providing direct evidence of Bronze Age transportation methods for construction materials.
