Teesside Airport railway station, British airport railway station
Teesside Airport railway station is a railway station located near the airport in the Darlington area of northern England. It sits on the Tees Valley line connecting Bishop Auckland to Saltburn, featuring a single platform designed to accommodate trains with up to four carriages and positioned roughly one mile from the airport terminal.
The station opened on October 3, 1971, built by British Rail to serve air travelers. It remained one of the least-used railway stations in Britain for decades, with passenger numbers dropping to single figures in some years.
The station is a roughly 16-minute walk from the airport terminal, with bus routes nearby that can shorten the journey considerably. Check current schedules before traveling, as service frequency varies and some services may be suspended for maintenance or safety reasons.
In certain years, only about eight passengers per year used this station, making it one of the least-traveled railway facilities in Britain. A group of rail enthusiasts once organized a demonstration trip with 26 people to highlight the station's existence and advocate for its future.
