Ross-on-Wye, Market town in Herefordshire, England
Ross-on-Wye is a market town in Herefordshire, England, set on a cliff of red sandstone above the river. The town center clusters around a market house built from red sandstone, surrounded by timber-framed buildings and narrow passages between the rows of houses.
The town gained the right to hold a market in the 12th century and grew into a trading center for the surrounding farms. In later centuries, the settlement expanded through trade in grain and livestock from the region.
The town takes its name from the river that curves below its sandstone ridge. Residents gather in the small shops along the narrow lanes that have served as meeting places for centuries.
The streets in the center run steeply and are partly cobbled, so comfortable shoes are recommended. Walking is the best way to explore, as most buildings and passages lie close together.
A park at the edge of the cliff offers views of the curve the river traces below the town. This spot also contains traces from Roman times that were uncovered during excavations.
