Summer Isles, Island group in Highland, Scotland
The Summer Isles are a group of around 30 small islands and rocky reefs located at the entrance to Loch Broom on Scotland's northwest coast. The islands vary in size, with some inhabited and others remaining wild, all scattered across the water off the Coigach peninsula.
In the 1930s, scientist Frank Fraser Darling lived on the island of Tanera Mòr and conducted important research there. His work helped shape Scottish conservation practices and established a connection between the islands and early environmental protection efforts.
Since 1970, a philatelic bureau on the islands has produced hand-stamped local stamps that visitors use to send mail back to the mainland. This tradition has become a distinctive part of the islands' character and draws people who want to send postcards with something special.
Visitors need to take a boat from the Coigach area for about 35 minutes to reach the islands, with services departing from Achiltibuie and Ullapool. Check weather conditions before traveling, as water conditions change quickly and boat trips may be canceled in rough weather.
The island of Mullagrach has a heather-covered cabin that collects rainwater and features an outdoor composting system. Drinking water must be brought in bottles, showing how basic life becomes on this remote location.
