Shere

Shere is a village where the River Tillingbourne flows through the center, bordered by traditional stone cottages, two pubs, and a Norman church forming a compact settlement. The buildings cluster tightly together along the watercourse, with open countryside surrounding this concentrated core area.

The settlement began during Anglo-Saxon times and gradually expanded into a parish structure. Over time, it grew to include the neighboring settlements of Gomshall, Holmbury St. Mary, and Peaslake under one administrative framework.

The community gathers around St. James' Church, which displays architectural layers from different periods and remains a focal point for village life. People use the surrounding streets and green spaces to maintain social connections in this close-knit settlement.

The village has basic services including a blacksmith, trekking shop, tea house, and art gallery that meet everyday needs. A Church of England primary school is also located here, making it a community hub.

The parish covers a broad area, yet the majority of buildings cluster in a much smaller zone around the river in the middle. This concentration creates an unexpectedly walkable core that feels separated from the surrounding countryside.
