Woodhouse Copse, Arts and Crafts thatched cottage in Holmbury St Mary, England
Woodhouse Copse is a thatched cottage in Shere, designed by architect Oliver Hill. The Grade II listed building features brick construction with weatherboarding, a central stone chimney, and traditional thatched roofing.
The house was designed in 1926 for actress Amy Brandon Thomas and William Deane Barnes-Brand, incorporating timbers from an old Coulsdon mill. The design shows influence from Edwin Lutyens.
The garden was designed by renowned garden designer Gertrude Jekyll and Amy Brandon Thomas, featuring plants originally sourced from Jekyll's nursery. This collaboration shapes how the grounds feel and look today.
The property functions as a venue for music and performances held in various rooms throughout the estate. Multiple spaces are available, including a converted indoor pool used as a performance room and a lakeside amphitheater.
Architect Oliver Hill created a sculptural interpretation of thatch architecture that combines traditional craft with contemporary design principles. This blend of heritage techniques and modern aesthetics sets the building apart.
