Bosham

Bosham is a village situated on a natural inlet of Chichester Harbour, featuring stone houses, tidal waters, and a millstream running through its center. The settlement spreads along the waterfront, with traditional architecture and the proximity to the sea shaping its layout and character.

The village appears in the Bayeux Tapestry, depicting Harold Godwinson's departure in 1064 before he became the last Anglo-Saxon King of England. This representation shows how important the place was as a medieval port and supply point for the ruling class.

Holy Trinity Church preserves its original Anglo-Saxon architecture with medieval carved stones and ancient grave markers that visitors can explore inside. The place holds deep spiritual meaning for the community, visible in the well-kept graves and how locals care for this heritage.

Visitors should check tide times before parking near the water, as the harbor area floods twice daily during high tide periods. The best way through the village follows the higher streets, especially during the hours around tide time.

A Saxon coffin holds the remains of a king's daughter who drowned in the Brook, now resting at the foot of the chancel steps inside the church. This quiet burial in the sanctuary is a rare testament to the high status of certain family members in the early medieval period.
