Petworth, Historic market town in West Sussex, England
Petworth is a civil parish in West Sussex that spreads across two counties where major roads intersect and smaller settlements cluster nearby. The landscape combines agricultural fields with patches of woodland that give the area its rural character.
Petworth appeared in records from 1086 as a settled community with houses, woodland, and meadows that formed the basis of a rural village. The area maintained its farming character through subsequent centuries and continues this heritage today.
The Petworth Players perform theatrical productions throughout the year while the Petworth Society, founded in 1974, maintains the town's historical records.
The parish is easily walked on foot and accessible from the main roads in the region. Visitors should expect a quiet village setting where services are modest and local facilities may be limited.
An air raid in September 1942 caused significant damage to the nearby country house and left a lasting mark on the community. This wartime event remains a quiet reminder of how conflict reached even small English villages.
