Fortrose Cathedral, Medieval cathedral ruins in Fortrose, Scotland
The cathedral features red sandstone architecture with remaining sections including the chapter house and the south aisle of the nave with stone vaulting details.
Originally established in Rosemarkie, the cathedral was transferred to Fortrose around 1235 and underwent major construction during the late 14th and early 15th centuries.
The cathedral served as the episcopal seat of the Ross diocese, maintaining twenty-one prebends that generated income from thirty-one different churches in medieval Scotland.
Visitors can access the cathedral daily from April through September between 9:30 AM and 5:30 PM, while winter hours run from October through March between 10 AM and 4 PM.
The south aisle contains two separate chapels housing several burials, including the final resting place of Countess Euphemia and Bishop Robert Cairncross.
