Fearn Abbey, Category A listed monastery in Highland, Scotland
Fearn Abbey is a medieval monastery with a simple rectangular form and late medieval decorative details. Inside, a piscina and sedilia are visible, both carefully preserved after recent restoration work.
The monastery was founded in 1227 but relocated to its current site in 1238 under Abbot Malcolm of Nigg. This early move shaped how the community developed in Scotland.
After the Reformation, this place became a parish church and continues to serve that role today. The simple interior still reflects its origins as a Premonstratensian community.
The building sits alongside the B9165 road and is easily accessible from the roadside, with parking available nearby. Information panels on site explain the architectural features and help visitors understand the medieval details.
A lightning strike in 1742 hit the roof during a service and caused the flagstone ceiling to collapse. The full reconstruction took until 1771 and permanently altered how the interior looks.
