Fearn Abbey, Category A listed monastery in Highland, Scotland
Fearn Abbey is a medieval monastic church sitting alongside the B9165 road in the village of Fearn, in the Scottish Highlands. The building has a plain rectangular plan, and the interior contains late medieval stonework including a piscina and a sedilia.
The monastery was founded in 1227 and moved to its current site in 1238 under Abbot Malcolm of Nigg. That early relocation set the course for how the community grew in the Highlands.
After the Reformation, Fearn Abbey became a parish church and still serves that role today. The interior retains parts of its medieval stonework, which give a sense of its origins as a Premonstratensian house.
The building is easy to reach from the roadside, with parking available nearby. Information panels on site help visitors make sense of the architectural details inside.
A lightning strike in 1742 brought the flagstone ceiling down onto the congregation during a service. The rebuilding took until 1771, which is why the interior looks noticeably different from a typical medieval church of this age.
