Northumbria University, Public university in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.
Northumbria University is a public higher education institution in Newcastle upon Tyne in northeastern England, spread across several sites in the city. The institution offers programs in different academic fields and has libraries, laboratories and sports facilities distributed throughout its campus grounds.
The institution was founded in 1969 through the merger of three educational establishments, which together formed Newcastle Polytechnic. University status was granted in 1992 as part of a nationwide reform of higher education.
The name comes from the historic Kingdom of Northumbria, which once covered much of northern England and had its seat in this region. Today the university shapes the city through its buildings among residential streets and shops, where students and locals share the same public spaces.
The sites are reachable on foot or by public transport from the center, with the central campus closer to the city core. For a visit it is advisable to check opening hours of publicly accessible areas beforehand, as some buildings are only open to enrolled students.
In 2004 the institution became the first in Europe and second worldwide to receive authorization for research with human embryonic stem cells. This scientific pioneering role made it a reference point for cell research in the international context.
