Brighton Pier, Amusement park and Grade II listed pier in Brighton, England.
Brighton Pier is an amusement park on a listed pier structure in Brighton, England, stretching several hundred meters out to sea. The construction holds rides, game arcades, food stalls and small buildings distributed along the wooden decking, offering visitors a mix of tradition and modern leisure activities.
Construction of the site started in the late 19th century and was completed in 1899 after several years of building work. The structure arose after an earlier wooden predecessor from the early 19th century suffered damage from waves and storms that could no longer be repaired.
The structure hosts small pavilions and arcade halls with decorative rooftops and bright paintwork, which give the place a lively appearance and welcoming character. At weekends and during warm days, families and locals come here to walk, play games or enjoy the rides along the deck.
The site is accessible throughout the year, with many of the rides and food stalls operating mainly during warmer weather. Toilets and several refreshment points are located along the wooden walkway, and access is via the seafront promenade of Brighton.
The support pillars of the structure rest on the seabed and require regular checks for corrosion and damage caused by water. This engineering approach allows the whole construction to withstand strong tides and wave action without putting visitors on the platform at risk.
