Huney, Tidal island near Unst, Shetland Islands, United Kingdom.
Huney is a tidal island near Unst in the Shetland Islands, consisting mainly of rocky terrain covering about 17 hectares. It is separated from the nearby coast by a narrow waterway called The Yei and reaches a maximum height of roughly 19 meters.
The British submarine E49 sank in 1917 between this island and Balta after striking a mine laid by a German vessel. The wreck was designated an official war grave, memorializing 31 British naval personnel who perished there.
The name follows traditional Shetland naming patterns rooted in Norse language and heritage, visible throughout the islands.
Access to the island is only possible at extremely low tide when a sandy tombolo forms from the nearby shore. Visitors should check tide tables beforehand to understand whether safe access will be possible.
The waters near this island hold a sunken British submarine with official war grave status. The submerged wreck serves as a silent memorial to World War I events in this remote corner of the North Sea.
