Wimbledon Park, Urban park in Wimbledon, England
Wimbledon Park is an urban green space spanning 27 hectares with an ornamental lake at its center, tennis courts, and an athletics track. Walking paths cross through maintained lawns and link the different sections of the grounds.
The landscape was designed in the 1760s when Capability Brown dammed a stream flowing from nearby commons to create the lake. This 18th-century transformation shaped how the park looks and functions today.
The sports facilities serve as a gathering place where locals train, play, and compete throughout the year. These courts and tracks are woven into the daily rhythm of the community, drawing families, athletes, and casual visitors who share the open spaces.
The park opens daily at 8 AM and closes at dusk, with several entrance gates throughout its perimeter and the main one on Wimbledon Park Road. Wear sturdy footwear as paths can become slippery after rain, especially near the lake.
North of the lake lies Horse Close Wood, a wooded patch where ash and oak trees survive from before the 1765 redesign. These older trees create a natural pocket within the otherwise shaped landscape.
