Fleetwood Pier, Seaside pier in Fleetwood, England
Fleetwood Pier was a wooden seaside pier on the esplanade of Fleetwood, a coastal town in Lancashire, England, projecting out into Morecambe Bay. It contained a pavilion and a cinema that opened in 1942, making it one of the more developed piers of its time.
The pier was built in 1910, at the very end of the great era of British pier construction, and it became the last pleasure pier ever built in the United Kingdom. The Stefani family took over ownership in the 1960s and ran it for decades before financial difficulties led to its first closure.
The pier was a place where people from Fleetwood and nearby towns came together for dancing, films, and games on weekend afternoons. For many locals, it was simply the main spot for a day out by the sea.
The site is not open to visitors, as the area is being redeveloped following the fire in 2008 that left the structure beyond repair. If you are visiting Fleetwood, the seafront esplanade nearby still gives a good sense of the original setting.
Although the pier was built in 1910, its cinema did not open until 1942, right in the middle of World War II, which was an unusual time to launch a new entertainment venue. This means the cinema was operating while much of the rest of the country was focused on the war effort.
