Oxwich Castle, Grade I listed fortified manor house in Oxwich, Wales
Oxwich Castle is a fortified stone house with a substantial gateway, an enclosed courtyard, and a main hall positioned at the eastern side. The layout shows how a Tudor family organized their living space with both domestic rooms and defensive structures.
The Mansel family built this residence in the 16th century on the foundations of an earlier medieval fortress. The new construction reflects a shift from purely military structures to family homes that combined living spaces with defensive features.
The castle displays medieval jewelry and crafted items that reveal how the Mansel family lived and what mattered to them. Visitors can see pieces like the Oxwich Brooch, which shows the skill of local artisans during that era.
The site has a grass parking area and offers guided tours along with educational information for school groups. The grounds are accessible for visitors with varying mobility needs, making it easy to explore the different areas.
A medieval dovecote stands near the castle with about 300 nesting holes, showing how the family ensured a regular meat supply. This structure is one of the few surviving examples from the Tudor period in the region.
