Luton South, Parliamentary constituency in the United Kingdom, 1983 onwards
Luton South is a House of Commons constituency covering the southern and eastern parts of the town of Luton, including the town center and nearby airport. The area displays a mix of modern apartments and traditional houses, with The Mall shopping center, a University of Bedfordshire campus, and local parks like Wardown Park.
The constituency was created in 1983 from parts of the older districts of Luton East and Luton West. Its boundaries have been adjusted several times since to reflect population shifts and keep the voting system fair.
The name Luton derives from old words describing a place by a rocky location. Today the area is shaped by residents from many backgrounds, with South Asian communities in places like Bury Park and African, Caribbean, and Eastern European neighbors whose customs and foods blend into daily life.
The area is well served by Luton railway station with connections to London and other parts of the country. A new rail link to the airport opened in 2023 and makes travel more convenient.
The area was once known as a bellwether constituency that often voted with the national trend, but in 2010 it voted differently than the country overall. Since 2019, it has been represented by Rachel Hopkins of the Labour Party.
