Devil's Bridge, Medieval bridge complex in Ceredigion, Wales.
Devil's Bridge consists of three stone structures spanning the Mynach River gorge, each built during different periods to handle changing needs. The oldest bridge sits beneath two newer ones, creating a stacked architectural arrangement that shows how traffic volumes increased over time.
The first bridge was built in the early medieval period as an essential crossing over the deep gorge. Over the centuries, two additional bridges were constructed above it to manage growing traffic and reinforce the older structure.
The bridge features prominently in Welsh folklore, where the Devil supposedly built the first structure to claim a soul. Local legend tells how a clever woman outsmarted him by sending her dog across instead.
The site is accessible via marked walking paths that descend from a parking area to the gorge. A coin-operated gate provides access to the Devil's Cauldron viewpoint, which offers views of all three bridges and the river below.
The Vale of Rheidol Railway, a historic steam train service, terminates at a nearby station and links this location to the coastal town of Aberystwyth. This railway line is one of the oldest narrow-gauge lines still operating in Great Britain.
