Rainbow Theatre, Art Deco theater in Finsbury Park, England
The Rainbow Theatre is an Art Deco building in the Finsbury Park area of London with a red brick facade and geometric ornamentation on exterior and interior walls. The interior space rises through several levels and accommodates 2,802 visitors distributed across stalls and balcony tiers.
The building opened in 1930 as the Astoria Theatre and initially screened films before becoming a concert hall from the 1960s onward. After changing uses the Grade II* listed structure passed into the ownership of a church congregation.
The original Astoria name refers to the New York luxury hotel and reflects the ambitions of the opening years when the venue drew large audiences. Today the former entertainment building serves as a meeting place for a Christian congregation that uses the hall for worship services.
The building sits a short walk from Finsbury Park underground station and is reachable via several bus routes. Visitors wanting to view the entrance area and facade will find good vantage points along Seven Sisters Road.
The Spanish Moorish interior decoration with oriental motifs and arches forms an unusual contrast to the Art Deco exterior. A Compton organ with two consoles and thirteen ranks of pipes belongs to the original equipment.
