London Borough of Islington, Administrative borough in Inner North London, England
The London Borough of Islington is an administrative district in the inner north of the British capital and includes neighborhoods such as Angel, Archway, Barnsbury, Canonbury and Clerkenwell. It covers around 15 square kilometers and combines residential areas with commercial streets and parks.
The Saxons called the area Giseldone in 1005, and the name evolved through Isledon to the present form. Later the settlement grew into an important northern suburb of London and became a separate borough in the 20th century.
The name comes from Giseldone in 1005, meaning Gisla's Hill in Old English. Today you see traces of this past in the street names and in the architecture of older churches and public buildings.
Ten Underground stations lie within the borough and offer connections to different lines, making it easier to explore the individual neighborhoods. Numerous bus routes cross the area and link it with the center and neighboring boroughs.
The escalator at Angel Underground Station is the longest in the entire London Underground network and measures 60 meters (197 feet). Anyone using it experiences an unusually long ride down to the platforms at great depth.
