Florin Court, Art Deco residential building in Smithfield, London, United Kingdom
Florin Court is a residential building in Smithfield within the London Borough of Islington, known for its curved front and two extending wings. The nine floors hold apartments with large metal-framed windows set into walls of pale yellow brick facing Charterhouse Square.
Architect Guy Morgan designed the building after training with Edwin Lutyens and replaced three older Georgian houses in 1936. The structure later received Grade II listing status, recognizing its architectural importance to London.
The building takes its name from an old English coin and serves today as home to residents who share common spaces below ground. Neighbors meet in the basement lounge or use the pool, creating a sense of community within the modern apartments above.
The apartments spread across nine floors, with the top two set back slightly to allow more light into the levels below. Visitors can view the outer facade from Charterhouse Square, while the courtyard and interior facilities remain accessible only to residents.
The two wings curve around to form a U shape, directing apartment views toward the historic square while creating a sheltered courtyard at the rear. Television audiences worldwide recognize the building as the home of detective Hercule Poirot in the British Agatha Christie adaptation.
