North Bridge, Road bridge in Old Town, Edinburgh, Scotland
North Bridge is a steel arch bridge linking Edinburgh's High Street with Princes Street while spanning across the Waverley Station railway tracks below. The structure features three large arches and carries vehicles, pedestrians, and buses across this main thoroughfare daily.
The first bridge at this location was built in 1763 after draining the North Loch, enabling a direct link between the two districts. The present steel arch structure was constructed between 1894 and 1897 using engineering methods refined through other major bridge projects of that era.
The name North Bridge reflects its role as the main connection between two historically distinct neighborhoods since the 1800s. A military memorial set into the stonework honors local soldiers and serves as a quiet reminder of the city's past.
The bridge is freely accessible and used by pedestrians and vehicles throughout the day. Visitors can cross it at any time, though wet weather may make the surface slippery underfoot.
The engineer behind this bridge had recently completed work on one of Europe's major railway bridge projects, bringing expert knowledge of large-scale steel construction. This experience resulted in a notably sturdy design that has withstood over a century of heavy traffic.
