Fan Fawr, Mountain summit in Brecon Beacons, Wales
Fan Fawr is a mountain summit in the Brecon Beacons in Wales, rising to 734 meters high. Its northern and eastern sides feature steep slopes with exposed rock, while the surrounding landscape shows rolling moorland and deep valleys.
The mountain served as a natural boundary between different Welsh communities from medieval times onward. This prominent landmark shaped territorial divisions that continued to influence the region for generations.
The name Fan Fawr comes from Welsh and means 'great peak', reflecting the language that shaped the region's geography and identity for centuries.
The mountain can be reached through several walking paths starting from Storey Arms outdoor center, which has parking facilities. Routes start gently but become steeper as you gain elevation, and exposed rock sections require care.
From the summit, neighboring peaks Craig Cerrig-gleisiad and Fan Frynych are clearly visible, along with the broader Brecon Beacons range beyond them. This sweeping view makes the summit a natural vantage point for understanding the larger mountain landscape.
