Cribinau, Tidal island near Aberffraw, Wales.
Cribinau is a tidal island in Wales that emerges between Porth China and Porth Cwyfan, located roughly 2 kilometers west of Aberffraw on the Isle of Anglesey. It becomes accessible on foot during low tide and is now mainly known for the medieval church ruins that sit on its surface.
St Cwyfan's Church was built in the 13th century on the mainland of Anglesey and stood for centuries near the coast. Intense coastal erosion during the second half of the 1700s gradually transformed the surrounding land into an island.
Local Welsh-speaking residents successfully petitioned in 1773 to ensure that only Welsh-speaking clergy would serve in their parishes following a significant court case.
To visit the island, you must walk across during low tide, which means checking local tide tables beforehand is essential. Plan your visit so that you have enough time to return before the next high tide arrives.
A large stone seawall encircles the island to protect the historic church and surrounding graves from ongoing coastal erosion. This defensive structure is a visible reminder of ongoing efforts to preserve this vulnerable site from the sea.
