The Backs, Garden area near River Cam, Cambridge, England
The Backs extends along both sides of the River Cam, featuring college grounds, lawns, and gardens behind several Cambridge University buildings.
From the 16th century until 1750, the area served as pastures and orchards for the colleges, with wooden bridges crossing the River Cam.
The gardens create connections between six major colleges: St John's, Trinity, Trinity Hall, Clare, King's, and Queens', forming an educational landscape.
Visitors can access public walking paths throughout the 10-hectare grounds, offering views of college architecture and riverside landscapes year-round.
The area maintains its agricultural heritage as cattle still graze behind King's College, continuing a centuries-old practice in central Cambridge.
