Chenies Manor House, Tudor manor house in Chenies, England
Chenies Manor House is a Tudor manor house in Chenies, England, with brick-and-flint walls and an octagonal tower. The building preserves a 13th-century well, a dungeon, and a chapel integrated into the present layout.
The Cheyne family held the property from 1180 until it passed by marriage to the Russell family in 1526, who became Earls of Bedford. Catherine of Aragon, Elizabeth I and other monarchs visited the house during Tudor times as guests.
The Bedford Chapel within Chenies parish church functions as a private mausoleum for the Russell family, maintaining centuries of aristocratic traditions.
Access is through guided tours on Mondays and Tuesdays between 2 PM and 5 PM, combining house and garden. The rooms are on multiple levels with stairs, so movement inside the building is partly limited.
Excavations in 2004 revealed foundations of former wings indicating the property once formed a large quadrangle layout. These vanished sections extended the house considerably beyond its present size.
