Raeburn Place, Sports ground in Stockbridge, Edinburgh, Scotland
Raeburn Place is a sports ground in the Stockbridge area of Edinburgh, Scotland. It features a grandstand with a flat, dark roof and tiered concrete steps for seating, set against a grass field with white goalposts.
Raeburn Place hosted the first international rugby match on 27 March 1871, when Scotland beat England. It was also the venue for the first Calcutta Cup match in 1879 and the Women's Rugby World Cup final in 1994.
The name Raeburn Place comes from the Scottish portrait painter Henry Raeburn, who was born in the area. Today, the ground is a gathering spot for local sports clubs and fans, and the nearby streets often buzz with rugby talk on match weekends.
The ground is easy to reach on foot or by bus from central Edinburgh, and the surrounding streets have shops and cafes. Visitors should check local listings for match days, as the area gets busy with spectators.
The ground is home to the Edinburgh Academical Football Club, the oldest rugby club in Scotland. It also hosted the first women's rugby international for both Scotland and Ireland in 1993.
