Quantum Cloud, Steel sculpture at North Greenwich Pier, England
Quantum Cloud is a steel sculpture on the Thames comprising thousands of tetrahedral units arranged in a cloud-like formation. The entire structure is held together by over five kilometers of steel components, creating a dense mathematical pattern throughout.
The sculpture was completed in 1999 and was the tallest artwork in the United Kingdom at that time. It was commissioned by the New Millennium Experience Company as part of celebrations marking the turn of the century.
The sculpture was created through collaboration between an artist and a mathematician, bridging creative expression and scientific thinking. It represents the fusion of art and technology at the turn of the millennium.
The work can be viewed from multiple vantage points along the riverbank or from the Emirates Air Line cable car crossing the water. The best views emerge from different angles depending on where you stand around the site.
Hidden within the structure is a human figure that emerges from the complex arrangement of steel sections. This concealed form becomes visible or disappears depending on where you stand around it.
