Whitelee Wind Farm, Onshore wind farm in East Ayrshire, Scotland
The wind farm spans 55 square kilometers with 215 turbines positioned at 300 meters above sea level, generating power for the national electricity grid.
First Minister Alex Salmond inaugurated the facility in May 2009, although power generation had started in January 2008 with the initial phase of turbines.
The area contains Lochgoin Farm, which served as a refuge for Covenanters in the 17th century, marked by a memorial erected in 1896.
The visitor center provides access to 90 kilometers of paths for cycling, walking, and horse riding, along with educational exhibits about renewable energy.
A £21 million battery storage system installed in 2022 made this location the holder of the largest wind farm battery system in the United Kingdom.
