Loudoun Kirk

Loudoun Kirk is a medieval church ruin in East Ayrshire whose stone walls display Gothic architectural features including a prominent chancel arch and a standing western gable. The structure shows typical building techniques of its period with functional elements that remain visible today.

The church was founded in 1451 and served as the parish church until the 17th century, when religious activities moved to the nearby town of Newmilns. This shift marked the end of its role as an active place of worship for the community.

The graveyard holds burial sites of Scottish nobles, including a Campbell family vault with memorial stones that tell stories of local families. These resting places show how significant this location was for the region's most important households.

Access to the kirk grounds comes through a gate off the main road, with parking available near the cemetery perimeter. The location is easy to reach and offers visitors a straightforward way to explore the ruins.

The right hand of Francis Rawdon-Hastings, the 2nd Earl of Moira, rests in the family vault following his specific request made upon his death in 1826 aboard HMS Revenge. This unusual burial choice reflects a rare personal decision that emphasizes the noble family's connection to this place.
