Nelson Monument, Bronze monument at Exchange Flags, Liverpool, England
Nelson Monument is a bronze sculpture located at Exchange Flags in Liverpool that features a circular base surrounded by four chained prisoner statues. Bronze panels on the structure depict naval battles and decorative festoon elements.
Following Admiral Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, Liverpool's city leaders launched a public fundraising campaign for this monument. The local community supported the project financially, reflecting their pride in British naval achievements.
The inscription 'England expects every man to do his duty' appears prominently on this monument, expressing values tied to British naval tradition. The four chained prisoner figures surrounding the base represent conquered enemies and naval triumph.
This monument sits at Exchange Flags in downtown Liverpool, just north of the Town Hall and easy to reach on foot. You can view it freely at any time since it stands in a public square with open access.
During the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest, artists surrounded this structure with approximately 2,500 sandbags in an art installation called 'Protect the Beats'. This temporary intervention created an unexpected dialogue between a historic monument and contemporary artistic practice.
