10 Palace Gate, Modernist apartment block in Kensington, England
10 Palace Gate is a residential block featuring artificial stone panels, dark timber framing, and a facade divided into three vertical sections. The structure shows the typical features of modern housing design with clear lines and functional planning.
Wells Coates completed this structure in 1939 with innovative spatial concepts that changed residential architecture of the time. The building later received Grade II* listed status for its design importance.
The building shows how European design ideas from the 1930s were brought into London's residential landscape. You can see today how modernist thinking shaped the way people live in this space.
The building sits next to Hyde Park with access to several Underground stations and nearby museums and cultural venues. Keep in mind that this is an active residential building that cannot be freely entered.
The building uses Coates' three-two system, creating different ceiling heights for private and public spaces. This system was an early solution to achieve variety in living units without complicating construction.
