Syrian-Saudi businessman Wafic Saïd funded its foundation in 1996 with a major donation. The site was previously home to Oxford Rewley Road station, which closed in 1951.
The Park End Street campus takes its name from the street running along the western edge of the city center. The complex was designed by architect Jeremy Dixon and combines glass and steel with elements of traditional college architecture.
Access is through Park End Street, a short walk from Oxford station. Public lectures and events are regularly announced and usually open to interested visitors.
One hall carries the name of Nelson Mandela, who attended its opening in person in 2002. The outdoor amphitheater now also serves as a meeting place for students between classes.
