Golders Green Crematorium, Grade II listed crematorium in Barnet, England
Golders Green Crematorium is a Grade II listed crematorium in the London Borough of Barnet, built of red brick with two chapels and three columbaria. The five-acre gardens surround maintained lawns, ponds, and paths that lead to different memorial sections.
The crematorium opened in 1902 as the first of its kind in London and was designed by Ernest George and Alfred Yeates. The architects drew inspiration from north Italian Romanesque churches, combining arches with slim brick structures.
For Jewish communities in London the site serves as a place for funerals, and many families return to visit relatives. The memorial gardens are often used as quiet retreats, where people sit on benches and walk among the plaques.
The memorial gardens are open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM and offer visitors access to green spaces, benches, and ponds. Guided visits to the columbarium can be arranged on weekdays by prior appointment.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission memorial, designed by Edward Maufe, commemorates 496 servicemen and was unveiled in 1952. The facade of the main building carries biblical inscriptions in Gothic script reminiscent of early medieval manuscripts.
