Raby Castle, Medieval castle and house museum in County Durham, England
Raby Castle is a medieval fortress with multiple towers and crenellations in County Durham. The robust stone structure is surrounded by landscaped gardens and contains numerous rooms that show how people lived here over time.
John Neville, the third Baron Neville of Raby, built this fortified residence between 1367 and 1390. It later transformed from a military fortress into a grand country house as the family's wealth and influence grew.
The castle displays an impressive collection of art and historical portraits throughout its grand rooms. These works reflect the lifestyle and tastes of the families who called this place home over the centuries.
You can explore the castle interiors, gardens, and deer park during the open season. The site is easier to visit on quieter days when you can move through the rooms at your own pace.
The medieval kitchen remained unchanged until 1954 and displays its original features from centuries past. This room offers a rare glimpse into how cooking was done in earlier times before modern conveniences.
