A Spire for Mansfield, Public sculpture in Mansfield town center, England
A Spire for Mansfield is a 13-meter tall structure made of polished stainless steel shaped like a feather with laser-cut tines that move in the wind. The reflective metal surfaces catch sunlight and mirror surrounding trees, creating constantly changing visual effects throughout the day.
The sculpture was installed in 2007 as part of a council commission to enhance the town center through public art. It stands as part of a broader effort to revitalize Mansfield through contemporary artistic projects.
The artwork references the region's coal mining past and the canaries that miners once carried as safety alerts underground. Its form also honors elements connected to nearby Sherwood Forest and celebrates local craftsmanship traditions.
The sculpture stands at the junction of Chesterfield Road and West Gate on a raised grassy area next to an old viaduct. The elevated setting allows good views of the structure from multiple angles and approaches.
The tines of the structure are designed to move and shift with wind currents, giving the work a living quality that changes constantly. Different wind speeds create varying movement patterns, making the piece feel responsive and animated rather than static.
